Destination Success … tips from grads
FAXING MADE EASY (AND CHEAP!)
State Resources
Need a bookkeeper?

Destination Success was a lot of fun!  It was great talking with everyone and I saw several alumni who told me about their experiences getting started.  One is doing very well after less than a year in practice.  Another is struggling to find the right location.  A grad told me to warn everyone about CAM (that’s “common area maintenance” on leases, for rest rooms, hallways, walkways, etc.)  These costs can greatly increase your lease cost.  Don’t forget to ask about the CAM costs before you sign the lease!  Don’t be afraid to walk away from a location that sounds good if you think they’re charging too much.  One grad reported build-out in excess of $100,000 for a newer area.  Crazy!  More on reports from grads in the next newsletter.

FAXING MADE EASY and CHEAP.  Don’t spend money on a fax machine and separate fax phone line for your office.  There is an easy way to send faxes by email.  I use a combo printer/copier/fax machine (under $200).  I also use an online fax program, like myfax (www.myfax.com) ($10 per month), or GoDaddy’s “faxthruemail” (www.godaddy.com) . You can send a fax by attaching documents to emails.  In a couple of cases, I have needed to scan documents and attach them to emails.  This saves lots of money because you don’t need a separate fax phone line and you won’t be tying up a business line with faxes.  For printers, I have two:  the “combo” one I mentioned, which prints in color.  I use this for making copies, printing short run stuff.  I also have a laser printer for B&W quantity printing.  For longer run color stuff, I would go to the local print shop.

State Resources you will need for startup:

·        Public health department for X-ray certification

·        Labor Department (Iowa’s is the Division of Labor Services) for labor laws

·        Department of Revenue for sales tax information

·        Secretary of State for registering your legal form, reserving a business name

Need a bookkeeper?  One of the first people you hire should be a bookkeeper.  You should also have a CPA to help with taxes, and your CPA may have a bookkeeper working for him/her.  Or you may have someone who wants to do your “books” and says “I know about bookkeeping.”  If you want to be sure that your bookkeeper has the right expertise, here is a resource.  It’s an online bookkeeping test online, presented by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers.  Here’s the link:  http://www.aipb.org/testrequest.php
