QUOTE: Courage
does not always roar. Sometimes, it is the quiet voice at
the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow".

Encouragement Resources
About Courage. It takes a lot of courage to start a
new business. There are many people out there who will tell
you that you aren’t going to make it, they are not going to
help you, and you might as well just give up. Banks, for
example, are not very helpful. I was talking to a grad
recently who said a large national bank told her, “We don’t
do startup loans.” And there are greedy people who will try
to get you to lease a big office or force you to accept
awful terms, so they can get more money.
But, as they said at NASA, “Failure is not an option.” If
you believe, as I do, that you move toward what you think
about, then courage is getting up every morning thinking
about your new practice and making sure you are doing
something that day to move toward what you’re thinking
about.
But there are also many people who want to help you. Your
family, for example. The classmates you graduated with.
Me. I am always willing to talk to you about how to do
something specific, or just give you a pep talk. Email me
and we’ll find a time to talk. I know about courage. I’m
doing the same thing you are, in starting my business, and I
figure helping you helps me.
A couple of stories about courage:
·
How many times do you have to start a practice
before you “get it”? I heard of a doctor who failed twice
before finally becoming successful the third time. Maybe
the third time really is a charm!
·
This week I heard three stories of students
and new grads getting loans. One went into his local bank
to talk in general terms about getting a loan, and they
said, ‘How much do you want?” Another had three offers (!)
from different banks, and chose the best one.
Some encouragement resources:
§
Each day I receive a positive saying by
email. To sign up for this service, go to
http://attitudemedia.com . Reading these sayings is a
great way to get daily encouragement.
§
More recently, I have found a new way to
enjoy encouraging words – called “wall words.” They print
out sayings in large fonts and send them to you to put on
your walls. This would be a great idea for your office.
They are at
www.wallwords.com – not terribly expensive. I liked the
“7 words” idea and I’m thinking about what 7 words I should
put on my walls in my office. What words would you choose?
§
Give yourself to someone else. By giving
courage to others, by thinking about someone else, we bring
courage to ourselves. The Dalai Lama says, “Be kind
whenever possible. It is always possible.”
Finally, a couple of quotes on courage:
Success is that old ABC – ability, breaks, and
courage. (Charles Luckman).
“A bit of advice given to a young Native American
at the time of his initiation: "As you go the way of
life, you will see a great chasm. Jump. It’s not as wide as
you think."”
- Joseph Campbell

An Italian poet said, "We live in a flash of light;
evening comes and it is night forever." It’s only a flash
and we waste it. We waste it with our anxiety, our worries,
our concerns, our burdens.” Anthony de Mello, 20th
century Jesuit priest.
My final words of
encouragement: After spending many years and much money to
become a chiropractor, don’t waste the rest of your life in
regret that you didn’t do it. Just do it.
